Since his engagement to Laura, Adam has secretly been building a house for her as a wedding present. His single-handed efforts cause long and unexplained absences and his complete exhaustion when he's with Laura, leave her hurt and confused. Ben continually calls on his nephew, Will to escort Laura in Adam's absence. Unwilling to betray his cousin, Will is silent about his growing feelings for Laura and remains the perfect gentleman in her presence. But when Adam misses his own engagement party and Will is asked once again to take Laura home, it becomes difficult for him to ignore the attraction he's fought for months.

Unable to deny his feelings for Laura, Will tries to make a hasty exit from her house. But sensing his sudden mood change, Laura pleads with him to tell her what is wrong, insisting she might be able to help. Will's conscience battles with his heart and his heart wins. He kisses her. Shocked, Laura watches him turn and leave. By the time Adam returns home, Laura is thoroughly confused about her feelings for both men and the next day, she goes in search of Will to try to find an answer.

Finding himself once again alone with Laura, tests Will's restraint. To his surprise, she asks him to kiss her again and in the aftermath of a passionate kiss, they admit their love for each other. Determined to face Adam together, they are horrified when they witness his fall from the roof of the house he's building Laura. The fall paralyzes Adam, leaving him dependent on Laura and his family. Will and Laura agree to keep their relationship a secret to avoid upsetting Adam. But watching Laura play the role of devoted fiancee to his cousin, becomes too much for Will to endure. And when the prospect of Adam walking again dims with each passing day, Will determines to leave the Ponderosa, leaving Laura and Adam free to marry.

Laura discovers Will is planning to leave and confronts him, pleading with him to stay. But Will is adament that as long as Adam is in a wheelchair, they could never be happy together. In desperation, Laura tells Will that she'll always love him and they kiss an emotional goodbye. Having overheard their confession of love, Adam realizes that what he feels for Laura is not the kind of love needed for a successful marriage and later he tries to convince Will to marry Laura. Thinking Adam is only being noble, Will refuses the offer and resolves to leave the Ponderosa immediately. Watching Laura's heartbroken expression as she sees Will placing his belongings in a wagon, gives Adam the strength to get out of his wheelchair. Laura's shock at seeing Adam standing turns to joy when he tells her he no longer needs her. Realizing she's free; she rushes to Will and the happy couple ride off into the sunset together.
