Having discovered his employer, E.J. Butler, was running a money counterfeiting ring, Will Cartwright abandons his job, taking Butler's engraving plates with him. In Pine City, Nevada, Will encounters one of a posse of killers Butler hired to recover the stolen plates. In the gun battle that ensues, Will, an expert shot, kills the gunman. To mislead the other killers he knows are looking for him, Will changes identification with the dead man, but as he's making his escape he suffers a bullet wound to his side.

As he planned, the corpse is identified as Will Cartwright. But when the Pine City sheriff searches for relatives of the deceased man and notifies Ben Cartwright of the death, Will encounters an uncle he hasn't seen since childhood. Discovering that his long-lost nephew is actually alive, but in danger, Ben insists on helping. Reluctantly, Will agrees to return with him to the Ponderosa to recover.

At the Ponderosa, Will has to adjust to a family he's never known and who at first, don't entirely trust him. Ben challenges Will's decision to assume the identity of the dead man and let people think Will Cartwright is dead. After a heated exchange with his uncle, Will finally admits to himself that he must face his problems, not run from them. And, together, the Cartwrights defeat Butler and the killers who have tracked Will to the Ponderosa.

GUY TRIVIA
Guy and actor Robert Wilke, who played the Pine City sheriff worked together previously when Wilke guest starred in 4 second season Zorro episodes as the crooked Capitan Mendoza.
BLOOPER
Ben & Will first meet in a cemetery. (See last two photos in the top row, above.) Just after Ben identifies himself, the camera focuses on Will's reaction. However, if the viewer looks at the background to the right of Guy, a white car traveling left to right, can be seen driving into the scene. The car was evidently spotted by the director, because it stops in the middle of the screen and a short time later is no longer visible.
