From the moment he learns the beautiful woman at the picnic is Adam's girlfriend, Will reins in his attraction to her. Through Lil's matchmaking efforts and his father's encouragement, Adam feels forced into proposing marriage. And when he does, Laura hears the hesitation in his voice. She refuses; deciding instead to leave Virginia City and return to San Francisco with Lil. In a last ditch effort to repair the relationship, Lil invites Adam to dinner and tells him to bring Will, too. That evening, Will turns on the charm for Laura and leaves his cousin seething with jealousy.

The next day, while hiding his own growing feelings for her, Will confesses to Laura that he'd flirted with her the night before, because he knew from the start that Lil was using him to make Adam jealous and was trying to help. A few moments later, an accident leaves Laura injured. Seeing her hurt, Adam realizes he does love her. When he proposes a second time, the sincerity behind his words causes Laura to accept. Lil is ecstatic that her plan to make Adam jealous worked, but as she sees Laura's reaction to Will's farewell, she wonders if they caught the right man.
