(Aired September 11, 1957) For several years, Walt Disney had been interested in producing a television series revolving around Zorro, the legendary hero of Spanish California created by author Johnston McCulley.
When the fledgling television network ABC agreed to the idea, the new show became a reality. Soon a lead actor was cast, the sets were built, the costumes designed and all that was left, was to introduce the much awaited hero to the world. That introduction took place September 11, 1957 during Disneyland's 4th Anniversary Show.
With his "Mouseketeers" gathered around, Walt Disney began to spin the tale of El Zorro. And while his young audience listened with rapt attention to Walt's every word, the masked hero came to life in the form of actor Guy Williams.
Guy's obvious enthusiasm for his new role was evident from the start and although he was only on camera for a few moments, Zorro captivated the imaginations of young children throughout the country. Carving his signature "Z" into the air as a farewell, Zorro left his young audience eagerly awaiting the premier of his television show.
